| What is a retargeting ad? The word “retargeting” refers to the process of targeting (an audience) again. A retargeting ad targets website or app visitors that have already visited the website or landing page of the advertiser. What is a retargeting platform? Retargeting platform is a tool that allows advertisers to reach people who have previously engaged with their website or mobile app. |
One of the most common online advertising strategies is retargeting, which e-commerce marketers use to engage, attract, and convert the audience.
If you are a marketer or newbie looking to retarget visitors that bounce off your website or leave in mid of their purchase journey, then retargeting is for you. Start with how retargeting works.
Let’s dig deeper into the marketing tactic and find out the best retargeting platforms that may help your cause.
Quick answer: the retargeting platforms most advertisers use are the ad networks themselves: Google Ads, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), LinkedIn, X, TikTok, Pinterest and Reddit. Each one gives you a pixel or tag for your website and lets you build an audience of visitors to show ads to later. Independent platforms such as Criteo, AdRoll and ReTargeter buy display and social placements for you. Pick the networks where your buyers spend time, check each one’s minimum audience size, and install its pixel (or add it to your links) before you need the audience. Details below were checked on each platform’s own help pages in October 2026.
| Platform | How visitors join the audience | Minimum audience or limits (per its help pages) |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads | Google tag on your site; “your data” segments | 100 active visitors or users in the last 30 days for Display, Search and YouTube; membership up to 540 days |
| Meta (Facebook, Instagram) | Meta Pixel; website custom audiences | Targeting options are limited for audiences that include people under 18 |
| LinkedIn Insight Tag; website audiences | Needs the Insight Tag on your pages | |
| X | X Pixel or Conversion API; Website Activity Custom Audience | 100 X users before it shows as Ready; visitors stay 90 days |
| TikTok | TikTok Pixel; Website Traffic custom audience | 1,000 matched users to use it in an ad group; up to 400 custom audiences |
| Pinterest tag; visitor retargeting | Audience size updates within 24 hours | |
| Reddit Pixel and Conversions API; website retargeting | At least 50 users in the audience |
How does a retargeting ad work?

A retargeting ad is not rocket science. The way it works is that it uses the retargeting pixel code to recognize the website or app visitor and helps the advertiser reach out to the same audience through a retargeting ad campaign.
So that’s how a retargeting ad works.
Most platforms also let you upload a customer list (emails or phone numbers) or retarget people who engaged with your ads, and many now pair the browser pixel with a server-side API because browser signals can be lost. The guide to tracking pixels explains how the code itself works, and these retargeting ad examples show what to put in the ads.
Features to look for in retargeting platforms
Don’t shy away from going through the features before opting for a retargeting platform.
Here’s a brief list of features to look for when choosing a retargeting platform:
- Audience segmentation – Target specific user groups based on behavior and demographics.
- Cross-channel targeting – Reach users on web, social media, email, and mobile apps.
- Customizable CTA – Tailor calls-to-action to boost engagement.
- Real-time analytics and reporting – Get immediate insights into campaign performance.
- A/B testing capabilities – Experiment with creatives and targeting to optimize results.
- Integration with other marketing tools – Ensure data flow with CRM, email, and analytics tools.
- Transparent pricing – Look for clear pricing structures that align with your budget and goals.
- Minimum audience size – Each network needs a minimum number of matched people before ads can run, and that changes how small a segment you can target.
- Consent and privacy controls – Check that the pixel works with your consent banner and the rules in your markets.
12 retargeting platforms you can rely on
Following are some of the best retargeting platforms out there. Replug comes first because it is our product; it is a link tool that feeds the ad platforms below, not an ad network itself.
1. Replug

Replug is a link management platform that adds your retargeting pixels to short links, bio pages and QR codes. It doesn’t run ads; it builds audiences for the ad networks you already use, from every click on the links you share, even when a link points to a site you don’t own.
Its features include traffic routing for audience segmentation, A/B testing for campaign optimization, link cloaking for added security, branded link tracking for consistent branding, and click tracking to compare channels. Replug counts clicks and scans; conversions are measured on your website or in your ad platform.
Additionally, Replug offers customized link solutions tailored for agencies, affiliate marketers, advertisers, and publishers to enhance their digital marketing strategies.
Features
- Replug allows you to add retargeting pixels from multiple platforms to your links via its link retargeting tool, enabling you to track and build custom audiences from each click. This feature helps you re-engage visitors with targeted ads across platforms, improving your chances of conversion.
- Replug supports pixels for Meta (Facebook), Google (Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager), X (listed as Twitter Pixel in the app), LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok and Quora, plus custom code for other platforms (Replug link retargeting). Add a pixel under Settings > Retargeting Pixels, attach it to a campaign, and every link in that campaign fires it. Retargeting pixels are on paid plans: one pixel on Essentials and unlimited on Scale and Agency (Replug pricing, checked October 2026). Each network still applies its own minimum audience size and policies.
- By traffic routing you can direct visitors to high-converting landing pages based on country, city, region, device, browser, operating system, date, day of the week and IP address (Replug traffic routing, Scale and Agency plans).
- The split-testing feature allows you to test multiple link variations to determine the most effective options. This helps optimize your ad creatives, CTAs, and targeting strategies for higher conversion rates.
- The tool also supports UTM tracking, allowing you to add custom parameters to your links. This feature helps you monitor specific campaigns and understand where your traffic is coming from, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of each marketing effort.
- Replug’s intuitive dashboard centralizes link management, tracking, and optimization. It provides real-time data at a glance, making it easy to make quick, informed decisions without navigating complex tools.
- Transforms long or unattractive URLs into clean, branded links, which look more trustworthy than long tracking URLs, with the free link shortener.

- LinkedIn, as a social platform, caters to professionals looking to expand their network of contacts and advance their careers. It’s also an excellent way for digital marketers to connect with B2B sales/marketing targets on a platform where audiences seek business-related information rather than consumer entertainment.

9. X (Twitter) retargeting
X calls its retargeting lists Custom Audiences. A Website Activity Custom Audience uses the X Pixel or the Conversion API to collect people who visited or took an action on your site, matched to X accounts (X Help Center). In Audiences, choose “Create new audience” > “Website Activity” and set URL conditions such as “URL contains: thank-you”.
Features
- An audience shows “Audience too small” until it collects 100 X users, then changes to “Ready” (X Help Center).

10. TikTok retargeting
TikTok’s Custom Audiences can be built from a file upload, website or app activity, TikTok engagement or a partner (TikTok Ads Manager help). For site visitors, the Website Traffic audience uses the TikTok Pixel to collect people who visited or took a specific action on your site.

- You can build audiences from pixel events, such as visitors who added to cart but didn’t buy, and keep up to 400 custom audiences in an account (TikTok Ads Manager help).
- A custom audience needs 1,000 total matched users before you can use it in an ad group (TikTok Ads Manager help).
11. Pinterest retargeting
Pinterest calls it visitor retargeting: it identifies people who already visited your site and lets you reach them on Pinterest. You need the Pinterest tag on every page, plus event codes on the pages whose actions you want to track (Pinterest Business help).
Features
- Build an audience from specific events (for example, added to cart but didn’t check out) or from pages people visited, and choose how many past days to include.
- Audience size updates within 24 hours on the Audiences page.
- Customer lists must not include data based on activity from iOS apps or websites on iOS devices, or people who opted out of targeted advertising, per Pinterest’s requirements.
12. Reddit retargeting
Reddit’s custom audiences include website retargeting, which uses the Reddit Pixel and the Conversions API to identify people who interacted with your site (Reddit Ads Help). You find your Pixel ID in Reddit’s Events Manager (Reddit Ads Help: About the Reddit Pixel).
Features
- A website retargeting audience needs to reach at least 50 users after you set the lookback window.
- Engagement retargeting can reach people who engaged with your ads in the past six months.
- Reddit recommends pairing the pixel with the Conversions API to make up for signal loss in browsers.
How to choose a retargeting platform

- Start where your buyers are. B2B buyers are easier to find on LinkedIn; visual products often fit Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok; high-intent searches fit Google.
- Check the audience minimums. A small site may fill a Reddit (50 users) or Google (100 active users) audience long before a TikTok one (1,000 matched users).
- Install pixels early. Most audiences only collect people from the day the pixel goes live, so add the tags before you plan to advertise.
- Mind consent. Use a consent banner where required and make sure each pixel respects it.
- Use your links too. If you share content you don’t own, a link tool that fires your pixels on each click can still grow your audiences.
The mistakes that destroy retargeting campaigns
Try avoiding the following retargeting campaign mistakes:
- No clear vision for retargeting
- Zero audience segmentation
- Starting retargeting too early
- Not optimizing retargeting campaigns
- Delivering the wrong ads
